GKids makes splash with two in toon pool

'A Cat in Paris''Chico & Rita''Kung Fu Panda 2''Puss in Boots''Rango'Oscar's animated feature category saw 18 toons submitted for consideration, yielding a full roster of five nominees for just the third time since the category was created a decade ago.DreamWorks Animation nabbed two noms on Tuesday, for "Kung Fu Panda 2" and "Puss in Boots," while Paramount landed a slot for its first animated feature, "Rango." But the big surprise came from NY-based distrib GKids, which landed nods for two pics: "A Cat in Paris" and the jazzy "Chico & Rita."The nods for "Cat," from Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli, and "Chico," by Fernando Trueba ("Belle Epoque"), comes as GKids is expanding the number of pics it releases, having recently inked a deal to handle North American distribution of Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli's library, which includes "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke." It previously released Tomm Moore's Oscar-nominated "The Secret of Kells," Michel Ocelot's "Azur & Asmar" (with the Weinstein Co.) and "Mia and the Migoo." GKids also produces the NY Intl Children's Film Festival, an Oscar-qualifying event. GKids released "Cat" for Folimage and released "Chico" through its adult-skewing LumaFilms banner, due to nudity and other mature content. The two foreign titles are also up for the Annie Awards, being handed out Feb. 4, as are "Cars 2," "The Adventures of Tintin," "Arthur Christmas," "Rio," "Panda 2," "Puss," "Rango" and "Arrugas.""We are thrilled that 100% of the movies we made last year have been nominated for best animated picture Oscars," said Bill Damaschke, chief creative officer of DreamWorks Animation. "All of us at DreamWorks Animation are extremely proud of everyone involved with making these films and congratulate them on their achievements." This year, without a nom for "Cars 2," Pixar was shut out for the first time since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introduced the animation category in 2001. Pixar's absence is notable considering the toon studio has won the Oscar for the past four years with "Ratatouille," "Wall-E," "Up" and "Toy Story 3." This will be the third time Pixar hasn't had a pic nommed. In 2002 and 2005, Pixar didn't release a feature. However, Disney still had one or two films in the race those years..Among the other no-shows were Disney's "Winnie the Pooh," Miramax's "Gnomeo & Juliet," Paramount's "The Adventures of Tintin," Sony and Aardman Animations' "Arthur Christmas" and "Rio," from Fox and Blue Sky Studios. The omission of "Tintin" came on the heels of the motion-capture adventure pic winning the animated trophy Saturday from the Producers Guild of America for Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy and Peter Jackson. "Tintin" also won the Golden Globes animated prize on Sunday.None of the 2011 nominated animated titles are up for best picture. Contact Marc Graser at marc.graser@variety.com

Golden Globes Review: Third Time Not just a Charm

Ough Gervais If very little else, Ough Gervais can be a master at upending our anticipation. A year ago, he came blood stream as host-switched-heckler within the Golden Globes, redeeming his lackluster performance of year before. Returning for the scene of his crime against Hollywood the like, for just about any third and reputedly final gig, Gervais met the job of topping themselves by not necessarily trying."So, where was I?" he joked, while using stage Sunday evening among a crescendo of anticipation. A few momemts later, that's exactly what the relaxation everyone was wondering. Where was he?The targets within the smirkingly off-color but ineffectual monologue couldn't are actually more apparent and tired: Kim Kardashian, Eddie Murphy, Jodie Foster's Beaver (a roundabout method to position a Mel Gibson joke), Attacking Youthful Boys - and, using what increased being something from the running gag, women pooping (thanks, Bridesmaids). The show made an appearance being so likely to meet its naughty status it clogged on its self-awareness. Similar to this lead balloon from the intro from presenter Gerard Butler, explaining the Globes as "really the only honours show where the only factor worse nowadays hearing your title just like a nominee is hearing your title within the host." That wouldn't are actually funny even if it had been well crafted or shipped.Want more TV news? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!Gervais disappeared for extended stretches from the products felt an interminably extended evening, but unlike a year ago, when the Twitter world skyrocketed in conspiracy ideas he might have been fired or muzzled mid-broadcast, there's a collective sense of "just whatInch since the show drawn on.The strain also was apparent as Madonna taken proper care of immediately Gervais' feeble "as being a virgin" joke by retorting, "Should i be still as being a virgin, Ough, then why don't you come the following and take action? In . Carrying out a pause, she snarked, "I have not kissed a lady inside a few years.Inch Gervais then dashed over the rear of happens, nevertheless the gag went nowhere. It increased being more entertaining to question if your couple of from the presenters might be who audition for your gig next season. For instance Jimmy Fallon, undertaking a Mick Jagger lick while he because of the Voice's Adam Levine. Or Seth Rogen, turning up close to the glamorous Kate Beckinsale to announce, "I am presently trying to cover a massive erection." That they hiccupped, "How nice." (The higher penis joke was throughout George Clooney's acceptance speech, suggesting fellow nominee Michael Fassbender in the sex drama Shame could play golf with no hands.)Or typically the most popular, the married duo of Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy, who sang their intro as being a comic madrigal: "These stars did stunning work, heartbreaking, true and bold./Though four goes home empty-handed, you'll collect gold./You should not be humiliated, everyone did an incredible job./It is really an recognition being nominated, blah blah blah blah blah blah."Charm, just what a concept. There has been another sophistication notes in route: careful analysis add a clip within the original The Electrical Company, of Morgan Freeman singing "I enjoy possess a bath throughout my 'C'asket," within the Cecil B. DeMille Award tribute reel Kaira Pitt and Clooney showing one another peoples movies Tina Fey mischievously photobombing Amy Poehler their category was introduced Matt LeBlanc, winning for taking pleasure in a version of themselves in Showtime's Episodes, conceding the imaginary Matt "is a lot more enjoyable in comparison to real factor. If perhaps I used to be him." Meryl Streep promising when she recognized she'd forgotten her glasses (after which it sightseeing in the audience, including Clooney, make an effort to hands the specs her way). And among the TV individuals who win, it absolutely was satisfying to find out Showtime's Homeland win some major gold (for drama and Claire Danes as actress) and Modern Family collect the comedy prize after losing to Glee couple of years back to back. Downton Abbey in addition to miniseries and Luther's Idris Elba in addition to movie/small actor? Yes company, although these shows frequently blur the saying miniseries. Throughout my picks column inside the magazine, my preferences nearly all found pass, although Kelsey Grammer's conquer Bryan Cranston and Damian Lewis and Enlightened's Laura Dern beating New Girl's Zooey Deschanal were unforeseen. However when Gervais signed off, sheepishly watching "Hopefully needed your brain in the recession for some time,In . I possibly could not help wanting I'd spent my Sunday more skillfully - while using Good Wife, Not such a long time ago, The Simpsons, Downton Abbey.
